Natural cleaning products sitting in your pantry

One of the toughest parts of embarking on a greener lifestyle is finding ways to change your day-to-day routines. Cleaning is an unavoidable chore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t steer clear from chemical products that emit harmful toxins that linger in your home.

Step away from the bleach, because some of the most effective cleaning products are sitting right in your pantry.

BICARB SODA

Abrasive and odor-absorbing, bicarb does the job air fresheners and liquid detergents in one hit. Combined with water, use it in the kitchen to rid dirty dishes from tough stains by letting them soak overnight. Forgot about that container of leftovers in the fridge? A sprinkle of this magic powder and warm water will banish the smell of mouldy food. And if you’ve given up on telling the dog not to sleep on the couch, add a touch of bicarb to affected areas and whip out the vacuum to freshen upholstery.

LEMON JUICE

Not only good for shining pennies, lemon juice is one of the most powerful natural substances for cleaning. High in citric acid, lemons can cut through alkaline stains, such as limescale. They’re also antibacterial and can make the germs and bacteria that cause salmonella inactive. The citrus fruit also smells delicious, unlike the potency of bleaches and other chemical cleaners.

WHITE VINEGAR

Vinegar is an all-round winner for keeping your spaces spick and span, but it’s a handy alternative to mirror and window cleaners. Add ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar to 2 cups of water and wipe down surfaces to reveal a crystal clear reflection. You can also use on mouldy walls – use a spray bottle to spritz and leave for 15 minutes before removing.

EUCALYPTUS OIL

A national treasure, eucalyptus oil has many health benefits, but did you know it can serve to make your floors sparkle? Add the oil to a bucket of warm water and mop away on wooden, lino or tiles.

TEA TREE OIL

A few drops of tea tree oil into your washing machine can completely diminish the odor of stinky socks and sweaty gym socks. Combine with bicarb soda and water to concoct a powerful solution that will also lift stains caused by dirt and food.

Going natural with cleaning products can save you pennies on gimmicky items, reduce the use of plastic and save you those dizzying headaches when you’ve overdone it with the turps.
